Independence Monument is the best-known and most-photographed feature at Colorado National Monument. Photo (C) Steve Hight. The Colorado National Monument, a unit of the national park system, is a spectacular area of twenty-thousand acres of steep-walled red rock canyons located in western Colorado, near the city of Grand Junction, on the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado National Monument attracts approximately 500,000 visits per year.

The Colorado National Monument Association (CNMA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization* whose mission is to assist its agency partner, the National Park Service (NPS), with scientific, educational, historical, and interpretive activities at Colorado National Monument. Through operation of the bookstore, membership dues, and other fund-raising activities, the Association raises money to publish interpretive materials and to help fund NPS activities and projects in the monument, as well as outreach activities in the nearby communities.

The Colorado National Monument Association donates proceeds to a variety of projects in the monument. In 2006, the CNMA donated $54,017 in goods and services to the Colorado National Monument. The items funded include printing costs of a variety of brochures for visitors, a stipend for a teacher-Balanced Rock is just one of the many natural wonders attracting 500,000 visitors to Colorado National Monument each year. This series has proven to be very popular; recent offerings have included star-gazing sessions conducted by the local astronomy club, bird and plant identification walks, and geology lectures and hikes conducted by prominent local geologists.

The Colorado National Monument Association was first incorporated in 1964 as the Colorado - Black Canyon Natural History Association. In 1977, that organization was split, and we acquired our current name, Colorado National Monument Association.

The CNMA consists of one full-time and three part-time staff members, a seven-person volunteer Board of Directors, and about 500 paid memberships, mostly from the local community.
